Thou Prayest
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. (Matthew 6:5-9)
Sometimes when people ask me to pray for them, I get the impression that they believe that my prayers are more important to God than theirs are…
This could not be farther from the truth…
Jesus said “When thou Prayest” …
He was not only speaking to his disciples but all of us as well…
Remember every prayer is an act of faith…
It is important to understand that God listens to every single one…

Stuck In My Head
And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle,
and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth,
and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life,
of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was
destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man,
and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven;
and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive,
and they that were with him in the ark.
And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
(Genesis 7:21-24)
I just started rereading the Bible from the beginning…
When I reached this passage, I suddenly realized there was a lot of misinformation stuck in my head…
I thought every living thing died in the flood…
The reality is that only everything on dry land and in the air died…
Another thing that was stuck in my head was the flood was over and done in forty days…
It lasted a whole lot longer than that…
I knew better, but that is what was stuck in my head…
I must wonder, how much more misinformation…
Is stuck in my head…

Our Attention
And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
So, when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went. (John 6: 17-21)
This is not the passage where Peter walks on water…
In this case the moment Jesus steps onto boat they were
suddenly at the shore…
This is over two thousand years ago…
Today the thought of teleportation is common place…
So much so that we do not give it a second thought…
If it were to happen to us, would we really be shocked…?
Just what would Jesus need to do today to get our attention…?

Standards
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)
As we go through life it is the people around us that set the rules…
We are the ones who set the standard…
When I was in High School reading was not my strong suit…
When asked to do a book report instead of reading the book I would just skim through it…
If I received a “D” on the on the report I may not have been proud of it but was good enough to get by…
This was the standard I set for myself…
My standards for the word of God must be…
Much... Much Higher...

Mind Clutter
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength (Isaiah 26:3-4)
“whose mind is stayed on thee”
Mind clutter can take on many forms...
For me there are times when old episodes of Columbo will jump into my head...
I will go over them again and again trying to find a way for the villain to outsmart Lt Columbo...
It is very difficult to keep my mind on God with a man in a dumpy raincoat running through my head...
Satan is good at using seemingly innocent things as distractions...
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (Matthew 22:37)

Wants To
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
The other day my wife asked me why did create everything…?
He did not have to…
No one forced Him to…
He wanted to…
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)
As we continued to discuss it, we wondered why did He give us a living soul…?
He did not have to…
No one forced Him to…
He wanted to…
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
Then we asked ourselves why did He send His son to save us…?
He did not have to…
No one forced Him to…
He wanted to…
Finally, we asked why did He want to…?
In the end we decided that loving us is something He does...
Because we wants to…

Course Adjustment
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
When we think about Job we remember that everyone kept asking him what sin he had committed that made God so angry…
He knew God must have a reason for what was happening he just did not know what it was…
I my case it is not what sin but which sin it was…
There are so many to choose from…
My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Sometimes it is not an individual sin that is the problem…
It could be that God is trying to adjust our direction…
And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? (Acts 9:10-11)
Paul truly believed he was serving God…
Until God stepped in and gave him a course adjustment…
My pride and greed have often put me at odds the God…
On many occasions He has stepped in and given me some major course adjustments…

Loving Caring Father
Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt: (Exodus 3:16)
My wife and I were talking one day and I asked her, when you pray what is the image you see of God…
Her face lit up and with a beautiful smile and she said I see him as a loving caring father…
For me the image of God changes depending on what we are talking about…
These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the Lord God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth. (Deuteronomy 12:1)
As a teacher and a guide as I try to find my way in life…
Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger? Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt: (Deuteronomy 29:24-25)
As disappointed, when I have done one of the so many foolish things throughout my life…
And the Lord thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the Lord will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers: (Deuteronomy 30:9)
As pleased in those few brief moments when I followed in his footsteps in my life…
In my own way I also see him as a loving caring father…

Will Not See
Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? (John 3:10-12)
In my early twenties I was dating a young lady…
This was my first serious relationship…
We had been together for several months and things were going well…
One day she told me that her parents said she was no longer allowed to see me…
I asked her why and she did not know…
The decision was made that I should go and ask them…
I was ready for them to tell me I was not good enough for their daughter or that they had been offended in some way…
I was absolutely stunned by their response...
Our daughter told us you have a brother with Cystic Fibroses…
I told them it was true but why is this a problem?…
They had spoken to their family doctor and was told that all of our children would be sick and die…
I tried to explain that this was not true, however they just would not listen…
They told me it is over, you are not allowed to date our daughter…
Upon returning to her I explained that both parents must have the gene to have a child with Cystic Fibroses and even thou I have a brother with it there is only a 20% chance I am a carrier...
So far as we know there is no history of it in her family…
I asked her how she felt about this…
She said that she believed me…
The next day I went to see my brother’s doctor and told her the story…
She said their doctor clearly does not understand…
Leave this to me…
Two days later I received a very large manila envelope in the mail
It was packed full of research information and letters from a number of doctors…
My girl friend gave it to her father…
Without even opening it he said “It is all just propaganda and threw it in the fireplace…
We continued our relationship for a long time after that. Then one day she came to me and said…
“I love you but I need someone else to be the father of my children…”
And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
John 9:39-40

The Unknown Fear
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. (1 John 4:18-19)
Some years ago, at a church I had been attending for years something odd happened…
The Sunday service had just ended…
Several people were standing around in the fellowship hall talking…
There were also two younger children playing with a tennis ball…
Just as one might expect the ball escaped and rolled across the floor and came to rest under a woman sitting in a wheelchair…
She had been a member of Church for many years and was well known…
A strange silence fell over the group I had been talking with as everyone stood staring at the ball…
I walked over said excuse me to the woman and picked up the ball and returned to the children…
When I made it back to the group one of the men said “I would have never had the courage to do that…”
I turned and looked at him and said… Why…?
He looked at me with a blank stare as he realized he could not answer the question…
This is social fear…
John uses the phrase “fear hath torment” …
The torment in this fear is deciding which is worse…
Doing something that may, or may not be, considered the right thing by everyone else…
Or…
Doing nothing and hoping everyone else does the same…

Expected
And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; (Deuteronomy 29:2)
The Children of Israel saw the ten plagues of Egypt...
The fiery pillar...
The parting of the Red Sea...
In fact, they have seen so many miracles that they have become expected...
The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles: (Deuteronomy 29:3)
Even after all they had seen they still made and worshipped a golden calf...
Yet the Lord hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.
(Deuteronomy 29:4-5)
God’s miracles had become so common that He finally had to stop and point them out...
Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the Lord your God. (Deuteronomy 29:6)
After all that God had to remind them, He was still with them every single day...
Moses led about two million people out of Egypt...
Here we are today...
Over Seven and a half billion people...
We all have one thing in common...
We need food...
When may drive past a corn field or see some cows out in the pasture...?
Do we ever give any of it a second thought...?
How much rain does it take to water the corn...?
How much grass does it take to feed those cows...?
Has all of this simply become expected...?
What will it take to remind us...?
That God is still here every single day...?
Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; (Deuteronomy 4:9)

How Far Away
The other day a close friend told me there was a new phrase being used in some churches...
Physical Distancing...
I began asking myself this question: Just how far away is God...?
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: (Genesis 3: 8)
In Eden he was so close that Adam and Eve could hear him walking in the garden...
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. (Exodus 19:16-17)
In the desert God was only a mountain top away...
And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it: (Numbers 4:5)
In the tabernacle God was just beyond the vail...
When we pray how far away is God...?
Do we envision God sitting on His throne in heaven listening...?
Just how far away is Heaven...
Somewhere far beyond the stars, or is it no more than a single breath away...?
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. (Luke 11:9-10)
No matter where we are God is never farther away, than a knock on His door...

Two or Three Are Gathered
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20)
For some time now my wife and I have been talking about how people have become more and more isolated from one another...
Television, video games, computers, and even phones have helped to separate us from each other...
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (Romans 8:35)
Now something so small it can not be seen by human eyes has pushed us deeper into isolation...
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
Nor things to come...

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. (Revelation 22:1)
In the darkness of the night ripples of black satin flow over the edges of shimmering black marble...
Bathed in moonlight a single goblet of diamond cut crystal is set on fire by the flames of three pure white candles...
At the base of the goblet a golden plaque holds a prayer...
May the loving hand of God engrave His blessings upon the delicate vessel of my Soul...
May my heart always be worthy to receive the sweet wine that flows endlessly from the fruits of the Holy Spirit...
May every touch from the hand of Christ set my spirit to singing the praises of Heaven above...
Above all may the disharmony of this world never shatter My Crystal Soul...

Forging the Sword
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
Jesus came to earth for one single purpose...
To create the only way for us too once again have a pure heart in the eyes of God...
The Fire
Once again we find that there are prayers that can generate a tremendous amount of heat. Prayers for forgiveness are the perfect fire for purifying the soul...
Molding
Of all our prayers the ones for forgiveness should be the most common. Sins are a part of our everyday life. Seeking forgiveness must be the same...
Honing
Being willing to talk about our sins with others helps them to understand that God is willing to forgive them. Accusing some one of being a sinner often drives them away from God. God has His own ways of letting each of us know when we need His forgiveness...
The Sword in Action
A pure heart is the goal we seek in our relationship with God. We need to share this goal with all the people around us.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; (Ephesians 6:17-18)

By Faith We Know It
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. (Romans 1:16-17)
By Faith We Know It...
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.(John 14:1-2)

The Reverse
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Matthew 6:14-16)
There are times when these verses are misunderstood...
The other day I met an elderly woman in a wheel chair...
She seemed very upset about something...
She asked me this question...
If I have asked someone to forgive me and they refuse does that mean God will not forgive me...?
These verses state that God will not forgive us if we refuse to forgive others...
The reverse is not true...
I am not aware of any place in the Bible where God’s forgiveness depends on anyone other than us...
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
No one on earth can prevent God’s forgiveness...
She was joyful to know the truth...

Out of Thankfulness...
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
These are two verses we memorized very early on...
And we quote it time and time again...
It is the verse that follows that we seldom remember...
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)
We often talk about paying it forward...
Maybe we should also add something new... Like...

My Sins to Be
And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. (Deuteronomy 8:2)
I can not wish for my sins to be...
Forgiven...
I can not demand for my sins to be...
Forgiven...
I can only ask for my sins to be...
Forgiven...
Asking requires a humble heart...
So it is only my pride that keeps my sins from being...

Secret Faults
Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:12-14)
Secret Faults...?
Are they secret things that dwell inside of me...?
Or are they secrets I simply keep from others...?
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. (Romans 7:18-20)
It would seem that David and Paul have the same problem...
These are sins they just do not understand...
There have been so many times when sinful thoughts pop into my head from out of nowhere...
Worse yet there are words that jump out of my mouth that I did not believe I would ever say...
I ask myself...
Where do they come from and why...?
I would love to blame it on modern technology...
David and Paul did not have televisions or video games...
So what do we have in common...?
Anger, Greed, Lust, Hate...
Fear...?
We may never know just where these things come from...
What is important to remember is that God's forgiveness is never a secret...

English
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. (Genesis 11:7)
I speak English...
I do not speak British English or Australian English...
I do not speak Californian English or New York style English...
I do not even speak the same English that my Wife or Children speak...
A very large percentage of our anger comes from miscommunication...
When we talk we have a vision in our head and we assume the other person sees the same vision...
When I was in sixth grade our teacher gave us an assignment...
We were told to draw a simple picture then write down a set of instructions telling someone else how to draw that picture...
She then took those instructions and passed them out to other students and told them to draw the picture...
Needless to say none of the new pictures looked anything remotely like the
original...
Basically we judge people based on what we see and not what they see...
This often leads to confusion and anger...
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? (1 Kings 3:9)
Solomon asked God for a "Understanding Heart"...
When we talk to someone we need to listen to the words and the emotions...
This is what makes discernment possible...

Small Steps, Small Victories
Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. (Matthew 10:9-10)
Growing up in Oregon I spent a great deal of time with a group of hikers...
One of the toughest trails we ever traveled was in the Snake River Gorge...
The trail we took was less than fifteen miles long...
However it took us three days to complete...
Our leader was a very experienced hiker and on his own he could have completed the journey in less than a day...
When some of us compared ourselves to him we felt very inadequate...
While sitting around the campfire we expressed our feelings about this...
He explained that we should consider each step we take as a small victory...
For every step brings us closer to the end of our own personal journey...
In our Christian life we face same type of challenge...
We tend to compare our life to those of David, Paul and even Christ...
When we do once again we feel inadequate...
The only way to finish the journey is to consider each step along the way as a small victory in our own personal relationship with God...
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.

Intercession
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:16-17)
Father, Son and the Holy Ghost...
Of the three the Holy Ghost may be the one we understand the very least...
He is the one that stands with us day and night...
He is the link between our thoughts, emotions and soul...
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
Once again our emotions are in play...
Groanings which cannot be uttered are those emotions that are so deep that we just cannot put them into words...
They can be joyous or just plain anguish...
In either case we desperately need someone to hold onto...
Webster defines intercession as a prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of another...
The Holy Ghost knows what’s on our mind...
He also knows what’s in our heart...
It is His arms that are continuously wrapped around our soul...
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you... another Comforter...

Until the End
And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (Matthew 24:12-13)
When people find out that I was a mountain climber in my youth they often say that it must have been so exciting...
Most people have visions of me hanging by my fingers off the side of some cliff...
In reality the vast majority of my time was spent looking down as I placed one foot in front of the other...
It is a long and tedious process...
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. (Matthew 24:14)
Climbing a twelve thousand foot high mountain is literally done one foot at a time...
Spreading the word of God to seven billion people is literally done one person at a time...
Both require time and patience...
Better known as... endurance...
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved...

Relentless
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. (2 Timothy 1:5)
Webster defines unfeigned as heartfelt and sincere...
I would also define it as relentless...
My wife has what I call the gift of prayer...
She can pray for hours on end...
Not just for her children or me, but for all people...
One of her most relentless prayers is that Jesus will be standing there waiting for each of us at that moment of death...
Giving us one last chance to except God's gift...
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:16)
And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:42-43)

Willingly
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7)
I am always amazed by people who are willing to give you the shirt off their back...
Even if it is the only shirt they own...
We have a neighbor like that...
One day we had to be at a very important appointment...
When I went outside there was a very large pool of water under the van...
I look and found that a small metal tube had rusted through...
I went next door and asked for help...
This man went to his own car, cut off a piece of rubber tubing and patched the hole...
The truly amazing thing is that he would willingly do this for anyone...
The Bible tells us we need to give...
For some people this seems to be a God given gift...
With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. (Ephesians 6:8)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1)
This is where the bible begins…
This is where life begins…
This must also be… Where our Faith Begins…
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35)
This must be... Where our Salvation Begins...
If we truly believe that God created the Heaven and the Earth...
Then we must also believe that God sent this child to be our Salvation...
We can not have one without the other...

Clearly
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:3-5)
Just as most of us often do, sometimes I read a passage of scripture without taking the time to truly understand it...
Isaiah 53 is a very powerful prophecy and I had clearly missed it until the other day when a friend encouraged me to take another look at it…
This is not a hidden prophecy…
It is not cloaked in symbolism or mystery…
There is no doubt who Isaiah is talking about…
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:21)
This clearly shows why fellowship is so very important…

Absolutely and Completely
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. (Romans 4:6-7)
We have gone down this road many times…
It is just a very important thing to remember…
Forgiveness has two parts…
Part One
If we truly ask, God will forgive our sins…
Absolutely and completely…
Part Two
We then must accept that we have been forgiven…
Absolutely and completely…
Part one starts with faith…
Part two ends with faith…

Precepts
I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me. I am thine, save me: for I have sought thy precepts. (Psalm 119:93-94)
Precept is not a word we commonly use today…
As I read these verses my mind substituted the word concepts…
These two words have very different meanings…
Merriam-Webster defines them this way…
Concepts are defined as a something conceived in the mind: THOUGHT, NOTION...
Precepts are defined as a command or principle intended especially as:
A GENERAL RULE OF ACTION…
The word “precepts” appears twenty-one times in the 119th Psalm…
David takes God’s precepts very seriously…
In today’s world there are many people who see God’s precepts more as concepts…
So then…
What is our definition of the Ten Commandments…?
Are they notions or actions…?

Anticipation
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? (Romans 8:24)
This week I spent several hours planting tulip bulbs out in front of the house…
I could hear the sounds of tractors working as they prepared the ground for winter wheat…
Neither of us expected to see the outcome of our labor for several months…
For as long as the snow covers the ground there will be no visible evidence…
I know the bulbs are there and the farmers know the wheat had been planted…
For now all we can do is wait in anticipation of what the spring will bring…
This is hope in its purest form…
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

Fleshy Tablets
Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
(2 Corinthians 3:2)
Could this be the origin of actions speak louder than words…?
It has been said that we may be the only Bible some people read…
We tend to think of “Legalese” as a more resent creation…
It actually began in in the Old Testament…
The “Ten Commandments” became thousands of laws that no one could understand…Let alone obey…
Words like love, hope and compassion were lost in a sea of mechanical rules…
Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tablets of stone, but in fleshy tablets of the heart. (2 Corinthians 3:3)
Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? (Matthew 22:35-36)
The Stone…
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (Matthew 22:37-39)

Mutts
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)
When we were young my father worked at the Humane Society…
He could never stand to see a dog put down just because nobody wanted it…
Because of this we ended up with many so called mutts…
These were some of the most wonderful pet we ever had…
We are Scotch, Irish, Dutch, British and Native American…
My father often referred to us as mutts.
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:26-28)
My father could never leave an innocent life uncared for or unloved …

At My Age
Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.( 1 Chronicles 16:10-11)
I do not always get down on my knees to pray…
In fact most of the time I just look up and say what is on my mind…
This happens when I am driving, or working, or just mowing the lawn…
It is not that I lack respect for God…

If I wait until later it is a good bet I will not remember what it was I wanted to talk to Him about…

White Hot
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
(Galatians 6:1)
A fault by definition is a weakness…
We all have them…
If we really stop and think about it our faults are where our sins are born…
How we react to faults in others is very important…
When someone sins our first reaction is to condemn them…
What this verse is telling us is that meekness is the far better way to approach the situation…
Instead of anger it is compassion that we should feel for that person…
When we are caught in a sin our emotions are very much in play…
If we are attacked those emotions can become white hot…
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1)
This is the very essence of meekness…

Their Voice
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. (Psalm 19:1-3)
When these verses were written there were no city lights…
No tall building to block the sky…
There are people that have never seen the full effect of the night sky…
The moon and a few scattered stars is all they have ever known…
They have never walked through a forest or stood by the sea…
How does “Their Voice” reach these people…?
Has ever, been anyone that looked up into the sky…
And not wondered…?
Is there any place on earth where the sun does not shine…
Has there ever been a culture or a people that have not told stories about the mysteries found in the night sky…
There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. (Psalm 19:3)

The Sad Thing
And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. (Luke 10:39-40)
When sitting down at the computer my first thing to do is open my email…
Then the news…
Then the Bible…
Of course this all happens after the morning chores…
Getting ready for work…
Packing my lunch…
Too be perfectly honest…
Most of the time I do not open the Bible until after getting home from work…
By this time I am tired and completely unable to focus…
Somewhere along the way I might get around to praying…
The sad thing about all of this…
I do it all on my own…
Satan never has to lift a finger…
And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:41-42)

Caught in the Middle
Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. (Philippians 2:2-4)
I have had many running battle with people in customer service departments…
After playing endless word games with computer voices my nerves are always on edge…
By this time I have placed several… Well… Angry phone calls…
In many cases my issue gets “Elevated to the Next Level”…
All too often the issue remains unresolved…
My wife, always being the calm, cool and collected one, has pointed out that yelling at these people is not fair to them…
As always she is quite correct…
All of these people are caught in the middle…
They neither make the rules nor can they enforce them…
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
I have been demanding that I deserve to be treated better…
At the same time I am not extending that courtesy to these same people…

And God Saw That it Was Good
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:18)
The other day I was working in a warehouse size department store…
The power was out but I was still allowed to do my job…
The emergency lights where on however it was still quite dark…
As I walked around the store there was a very odd feeling…
It was not the darkness…
It was… the silence…
There was no music, no hum of the air conditioners, no voices from the loud speakers…
When we talk about the dark it is almost always considered evil somehow…
At the same time silence can also be even more unnerving …
And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:18)
God saw that it was good…
God did not create anything evil…
In that big, dark, silent building, there was just me and my thoughts…
This may be what God intended in the first place…

Mental Detours…
And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. (Mark 8:17-19)
I do not have senior moments…
I have senior hours…senior days…
We have all experienced this situation…
We walk into a room and have no idea why we are there…
Is this caused by forgetfulness or Mental Detours…?
I get up the go to the kitchen…
On the way I stop and pick up the mail off the table…
When I get to the desk I notice the checkbook has not been put away…
After that I pick up the dish left on the desk after lunch…
Once the dishes have placed in the dishwasher I look around the kitchen…
I have absolutely no idea what I started off to get in the first place…
One place where mental detours are very common is in our prayers…
We start off with a full agenda…
As we are rolling along stray thoughts start popping up…
Did I feed the cat today…?
Where did I leave the car keys…?
That argument I had with the boss today was really stupid…
After a while we can not remember what we have prayed about…
And what we have not…
Don’t think for a moment that Satan hasn’t been putting up a few detour signs along the way…

That Day
And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way. And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. Genesis 14:11-12
There is a day that I remember with crystal clarity…
It was the day the Challenger exploded…
I had the day off and I was painting the ceiling…
The music was playing so the radio and the TV had been off…
Later in the day some friends dropped by…
They asked me how I felt about what had happened with the Challenger…
I responded with a puzzled look so someone turned on the TV…
The first image I saw was a long white trail with a large gray cloud at the end…
I just stood there with tears running down my face as they showed that scene…
Over and over and over…
To this day I can not explain what I had felt at that moment…
Abram was not allowed to watch the destruction of Sodom…
If he had… I wonder if he could have explained…
